Revolving Door
73
This poem depicts a sense of a brief fleeting encounter, but one having deeper effects and connections. It was written about a specific experience, but one which occurs more often than just that one time.
We may feel we missed knowing someone we met only briefly, but perhaps there is often a lasting effect, either going one way or both, - a bit like a revolving door, in which one can see and behold the other person through the glass panels separating you, as he or she passes through the door going the other direction, but one has no further opportunity to make an attachment, though perhaps there could be a temptation. -
One may be tempted to go back through the other direction oneself and see if there was more connection. Then one may become aware that any connection sensed was merely iimaginary, though it can be memorable, just the same.

- REVOLVING DOOR
Poem written and narrated by Nellieanna Hay
Do you ever wonder why, out of all the multitudes of people on the planet at the same time one is here, the actual number we get to know are often so few? Doesn't it seem a little odd that there might be others who would "click" with us who are never even seen or recognized, if they happen to pass in a crowd? What is it, one wonders, that limits us so?
Oh, of course - the internet has broken many of the earlier limitations down - but of those we know here, still, how few we really get a chance - or take a chance - to really know. Are we a little scared? Perhaps, or we may be too wrapped up in our own subjective cucoons to really peek beyond them - and risk needing to expand them more!
But what IS that all about, Alfie, as the song says?
(Thank you Burt Bacharach and Hal David!)
This video is lengthy, but well worth it.
Revolving Door
You seemed to be a door
Appearing - suddenly,
Unlike all other doors
Before,
Or any that would be.
Cautious, careful, curious
Was my approach,
Wondering if I should,
If it is good
To try the latch.
Then swiftly,
Unexpectedly -
The other side!
Amazed, I gaze around,
I glance behind me.
There is no door!
There is no you!
I am alone!
Was I the door
That you passed through,
The other way?If so,
Perhaps it helped you, too.

You are
Worth your wait
In treasures
Of the heart.

You have captured
My imagination
Like a ray
Of sunshine
Captures playful
Dust particles
In the air
And holds them there,
Suspended in illumination
For an
Eternal Moment.

You
Have a way
Of saying ‘we’
That makes it sound like fun!

Ring of mirrors
In the fog,
Jutting facets
Cutting through the mist,
Certainties
More and less uncertain
In their tumultuous seas;
Reality the realer
In unrealities.
Oaring by, -
Momentarily
Sense, suspended;
Sight, obscured;
Sound, muffled;
Globe, shrunken;
Air, dense,
But for the certainty.
And I, whence.

Yes, Nellieanna, with Alfie it was "What's it all about?" and with Peggy Lee (remember her?) it was, "Is that all there is?"
Guess we just have to enjoy and live every moment we have without expecting to know the answers. Beautiful poetry - as always! :)
In through the out door,to me,refers to the etherial encounters and episodes that leave one a bit confused...revolving doors are my favorite kind of door,I'll have to look up"Up the Down Staircase, only heard of it in refference, take care Nellieanna.;)
One can see the artist's eye in your hubs, they are works of art. How curious, why do we meet just a few people in our lifetime? The answer is there, probably deep within, but the finite mind cannot really see it. Just getting philosphical here. hehe.
Beautiful poetry and visuals!
Thank you, Nellianna, for another masterpiece which I thoroughy enjoyed.
You are so consistently EXCELLENT (as opposed to good) that I have run out of praise.
And yes, I know the feeling. Coming across a complete stranger and suddenly feeling at such perfect ease with that person, that you KNOW that God designed you for each other. And then conventions get in the way, or the revolving door revolves and you are separated from each other, but you still know that she was the one...
What a beautifully gorgeous morning, home with my family, nestled in the warmth of love and life, to be blessed with the wonderous joy of your heart. You make my heart sing! Always yours - Dave
Nellieanna,
So, having treated us to your art and your gift with the written word, you decide to give us just one more piece of yourself...
I loved your narration. It made the connection even greater.
What a wonderful start to a beautiful Sunday morning,
You bless us all,
Chris
Very lovely Nellieanna, and very Brief Encounter. Life is full of "might have beens". We just have to make the most of what we have.
I remember years ago coming home, and my mother told me that this absolutely lovely lady had been looking for me while I was out.
She said how much she liked me, and how sad she was to have missed me; but she never gave her name, and, to my knowledge, never came back.
Thirty five years later I am still wondering who it was.
I live in a tourist area on the beach. It is called, Pismo Beach, California. My non "artist eye" did not recognize the beauty of a group of buildings I walk by everyday. I see an artist with her easel using her brush from almost the ends creating a beautiful picture from something I see everyday... ("normal scenes"). I was not aware. The subtle reflection from the stream that goes past into the ocean, the constrasts, the rainbows of colors creating a sense of timelesness and beauty integrated with nature and mankind...
Your feelings of, "we ponder both life's inconsistencies and its wonderful opportunities and choices, - even when we occasionally may sidestep confusion by aligning them well." sums up how our "awareness" may not be complete. Our "inconsistencies" may be the key clue to the "bigger picture" of what is. I had no clue of the inherent beauty of those buildings and their "settings," with reflections of tranquilty...
My "revolving door," is depicted by my avatar. It is a gate. I decide what is on the other side. I have a choice to learn and not create a revolving door of making the same mistakes and experiences the consequences...
Our Déjà vu, "already seen" can be a reference to build on... Many levels to reflect on...
This was wonderful. I'm doing something I have not done with poems before, I'm bookmarking these to teach my child a bit about poetry.
I can't describe how my mind is wandering and jumping from thought to thought as I read your work. I, of course, smiled, at "You have a way of saying ‘we’ that makes it sound like fun!"
The thought of the door;of finding that person, losing that person, but still having peace in knowing there are other wonderful beings to know and the memories of those gone are still with you... it was moving.
I'm so glad to have found you and your talent! :O)
Nellieanna...That door, that shining portal, that magic rabbit hole we all want to enter...what awaits..? Perhaps, as Auden has proclaimed. " All that we are not stares back at what we are "...
Thank you for this beautifully written poem and the lovely accompanying videos and your sweet recording...Larry
The world is blessed to have you Nellieanna and it was wonderful to hear your voice. Your poem has me pondering in the most sublime way.
Oh, Nellieanna, you bring many smiles to a troubled world through your words. I listened to your video and it was the voice and laughter of an angel coming through my computer. You are a dear, sweet lady and someone I am richly blessed to have encountered in my life. My favorite piece that you listed was: There's still a warm spot where we touched. You have certainly touched my soul. May you continue to reach out and touch other's through your words, both written and spoken, and through your laughter. God Bless and take care.
"Was I the door / That you passed through, / The other way?" I am in awe at your ability to use words to excite nerve endings! These words are so surreal, in the best sense, that they made my scalp tingle! And then you go and add, "If so, / Perhaps it helped you, too." and I'm dumbstruck!
It's almost like Christmas dinner when one has already eaten too much and yet, there is still one more taste sensation, one more little something, that one just HAS to have!
Your words fill me up and yet I still, greedily, want more because they are just so delicious!
Thanks for a superlative experience.
Love and peace
Tony
I’m certainly going to ponder for hours over that door, Nellieanna. . How many times did I open a door to find nothing behind it? Beautiful carved wooden doors with a golden knob, but nothing behind it. But I’ve also discovered paradises behind some of them – for example behind yours, Nellieanna.
Do we really take the time to get to know others nowadays? At this stage of my life I am able to measure the depth and width of another person’s soul faster as ever before. I don’t like swallow connections, because disturbing disconnection happens during the slightest storm. I prefer ten deep connections above a hundred swallow ones.
Thanks for this thought-provoking poems, dear friend. You know how much I admire you. Take care.
Nellieanna I have seen so many revolving doors in my life time, I often wondered how many people pass in the night never meeting one another. Imagine your soul mate walking through that door and you never knowing.
We wonder unaware of who's looking back at us and wondering the same thing. To think that for all the lonely people out there in the naked city, there is actually someone of their dreams waiting around the next corner, but only fate will determine if you ever meet.
Thank goodness their are mediums like Hubs to at least meet and share through the written word. Hugs
No one does it like Nellieanna
You are the queen of quibble, the queen of poetry, the queen of information. Your so talented. I am again, amazed by you.
Nellieanna,
Your poetry is awesome and I listened to Burt twice. Love this. My Mother always said ships that pass in the night with sadness, I like your positive take on life and the doors that we go through. I pray that my presence is always a warm spot that still glows - very beautiful.
Thank you!
What a beautful hub Nell! I ma new to hubpages, but love the wonderful contributors. I am always fascinated with the poem within the song.
A blank box that at this moment requires a comment, yet some blank boxes are at their greatest in their most empty form.. So I will not detract from the beauty of the box, or those words that collectively called for such a comment - to be placed within it; bar, thank you.
It is not knowing, that makes the wonder, that only entering will reveal. I have entered and you have been revealed. A wonder on the other side!
Perhaps preference suits convienence! One door, in and out, just many rooms with endless faces. My head agrees with you about perfection; my heart says that it is the beginning. Instead of searching for the water, we will simply drink and never tire from it! If perfection is finished, then it isn't perfect. Just the way I think, silly boy!
What else does it need to accomplish to become completed? Enjoyed! Simply enjoyed. BTW, my statement to it being the beginning, was intended, for what comes next, nothing in this world. If I conclude that once it comes, there isn't anywhere to go, I have believed in vain. I was also thinking, I prefer many inconviences. Smiling is one of them. :)
I have discovered I smile from the inside out, unfortunately, others mistake my face for frown. Does that mean some people smile from the outside in? So much to think about, sometimes even thinking is inconvienent!
:) :) :) BTW It did refer to the hereafter.
I love when women are sure. It always sets us up for the fall they pre concieved! Furthermore, I don't think anything you think is simple. You may express it in such elegance, but, I think, you use a few more gears. :)
I think there is a woman in you like every other and one unlike any other. I tremble at the first and marvel at the other.
I think we recognize souls from our tribe on the otherside. Those are the clicks, the special moments, the glimpses into something bigger. This is what your first poem said to me :)
